What is Specialty Coffee?

Specialty Coffee made a quick entrance into the lives of coffee lovers years ago, especially with the spread of third wave coffee shops in Turkey. Even after more than a decade since its introduction in Turkey, the Specialty Coffee concept is still new and we continue to learn more about it.

Nitelikli Kahve nedir? Kafein Kültür

In brief, Specialty Coffee refers to the classification of coffee that has been evaluated by Q Arabica Graders, who have received the necessary training and passed the required exams from the Coffee Quality Institute. These coffees have received a cupping score of 80 points or above and have passed certain standards for defects and size in a certain weight range. This classification is used in the global coffee market.

So, is only this technical definition enough to define and make sense of Specialty Coffee? In our opinion, no is not enough. 😊

When we talk about Specialty Coffee, there are many contributer involved in a serious production-consumption relationship globally, and without mentioning these contributer and examining their production, it can be difficult to understand and embody the culture of Specialty Coffee.

In order to understand and appreciate the culture of specialty coffee, we need to acknowledge the various contributer involved in the global production and consumption of specialty coffee, and examine their production processes. When a coffee is classified as “specialty,” it is important that we are able to transparently see the agriculture process of the product on its website, blog, or label. This way, we can understand how its producer, variety, altitude, and regional terrain affect its flavor. Furthermore, special attention is required at each step of the production chain, from roasting to brewing and serving. The coffee must have its own unique roasting profile and brewing recipe, and the entire production chain should reflect all the characteristics of the coffee fruit with respect. And yes, I said fruit – coffee is actually a fruit, and the part we consume is its seed! 😊

As Kafein Kültür, we offer specialty coffees from Nordic Approach and Sucafina Specialty brands in our selection, carefully chosen for their exceptional quality. You can find all the production information, package label, website details, and videos enriched with these coffees that we have included in our selection.

Then welcome to the world of Quality Coffee!
